Target Information

Glucagon is a 29-residue polypeptide hormone (MW 3482) produced in the pancreas. A related hormone, enteroglucagon (or oxyntomodulin), found in the intestinal mucosa, consists of the 29 amino acid sequence of pancreatic glucagon extended by 8 residues at the C-terminus.

Biological activities of pancreatic glucagon include:

• Glycogenolysis
• Lipolysis
• Gluconeogenesis
• Ketogenesis

These effects are antagonistic to insulin action, resulting in increased blood glucose levels.

Immunocytochemical studies show pancreatic glucagon localized in A (alpha) cells, comprising 15–20% of islet cells, mainly at the periphery of pancreatic islets. Pathological conditions related to glucagon typically involve tumors (glucagonomas), as no glucagon-cell deficiency or hyperplasia states are known.

Glucagon-specific antibodies are useful as:
