Target Information
Interleukin 8 (IL-8, CXCL8) is a 72 amino acid pro-inflammatory factor belonging to the CXC chemokine subfamily. It binds to cell surface receptors IL-8RA and IL-8RB and acts as a chemoattractant and potent angiogenic factor.
IL-8 expression can be induced by inflammatory stimuli in various cell types, including macrophages and endothelial cells, where it is stored in Weibel-Palade bodies.
It contains the ELR motif (Glu-Leu-Arg sequence) and signals through CXCR1 and CXCR2 receptors.
Previous names include NAP-1, GCP-1, MONAP, and protein 3-10C.
IL-8 and other CXC chemokines form a gene cluster on chromosome 4q.
IL-8 is implicated in tumor angiogenesis and growth, and plays a role in bronchiolitis pathogenesis.
