Target Information
Sarcoglycan transmembrane proteins are members of the dystrophin complex. These proteins form a complex localized in the cell membrane of skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle fibers. The alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-sarcoglycan subunits form a complex on the muscle cell surface membrane. Genetic defects in any of these proteins lead to loss or reduction of the entire sarcoglycan complex, causing autosomal recessive muscular dystrophy known as sarcoglycanopathy. In smooth muscle, beta- and delta-sarcoglycans associate with epsilon-sarcoglycan, homologous to alpha-sarcoglycan. Complete deficiency in delta-sarcoglycan results in Syrian hamster BIO.14 cardiomyopathy.
