Target Information

The protein encoded by ATP1B3 belongs to the family of Na⁺/K⁺ and H⁺/K⁺ ATPases beta chain proteins, specifically the Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase subfamily.
Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase is an integral membrane protein responsible for establishing and maintaining electrochemical gradients of Na⁺ and K⁺ ions across the plasma membrane. These gradients are essential for:

  • Osmoregulation
  • Sodium-coupled transport of organic and inorganic molecules
  • Electrical excitability of nerve and muscle cells

This enzyme consists of two subunits:

  1. Alpha subunit – large catalytic component
  2. Beta subunit – smaller glycoprotein component regulating assembly and membrane transport

The glycoprotein beta subunit is encoded by multiple genes; ATP1B3 encodes the beta 3 subunit. A pseudogene for this gene exists on chromosome 2.
