Target Information
Tight junctions are one mode of cell-to-cell adhesion in epithelial or endothelial cell sheets, forming continuous seals around cells and serving as a barrier to prevent solute and water passage through the paracellular space. These junctions consist of continuous networking strands in the cytoplasmic leaflet with complementary grooves in the extracytoplasmic leaflet.
The encoded protein, Claudin 6, is an integral membrane component of tight junction strands and serves as an entry cofactor for hepatitis C virus. Gene methylation may be involved in esophageal tumorigenesis. The CLDN6 gene is located adjacent to CLDN9 on chromosome 16.
