Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the INK4 family of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors. It interacts with CDK4 or CDK6 to prevent activation of CDK kinases, thereby regulating cell cycle G1 progression. Overexpression suppresses human cell growth correlated with wild-type RB1 function. Knockout mouse studies indicate roles in spermatogenesis regulation and tumorigenesis suppression. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding identical proteins have been reported.
