Target Information
Influenza viruses consist of three types (A, B, and C), belonging to the Orthomyxoviridae family. Commonly known as the flu, influenza strains can affect both birds and mammals. These strains form roughly spherical particles with a viral envelope containing two main glycoproteins—hemagglutinin and neuraminidase—surrounding the RNA genome and associated proteins.
The influenza genome is segmented into seven to eight fragments of negative-sense RNA, each encoding different viral proteins. Influenza spreads seasonally, causing millions of severe illness cases annually and up to half a million deaths worldwide, with higher numbers during pandemic years.
