Target Information
Thyroid Peroxidase encodes a membrane-bound glycoprotein enzyme essential for thyroid gland function. It catalyzes iodination of tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin and formation of phenoxy-ester bonds between iodinated tyrosines, producing thyroid hormones (thyroxine and triiodothyronine).
Mutations in this gene can cause congenital hypothyroidism, congenital goiter, and thyroid hormone organification defect IIA. Several transcript variants exist, with some full-length forms undetermined.
Diseases associated with TPO include Thyroid Dyshormonogenesis 2A and Congenital Hypothyroidism.
