Target Information
Ubiquinone (coenzyme Q, or Q) is a critical component of the electron transport pathways in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes. It comprises a hydrophobic isoprenoid tail anchoring it to membranes and a quinone head group responsible for respiratory chain activity.
The S. cerevisiae COQ3 gene encodes an O-methyltransferase required for two steps in coenzyme Q biosynthesis. This enzyme methylates early intermediates (3,4-dihydroxy-5-polyprenylbenzoic acid) and the final intermediate (demethyl-ubiquinone), converting it to coenzyme Q. The COQ3 gene product can also methylate the prokaryotic intermediate 2-hydroxy-6-polyprenyl phenol.
