Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and participate in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitoribosomes consist of a small 28S and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein and 25% rRNA composition—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. Protein sequences vary significantly among species, complicating identification by homology. The MRPL41 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein belonging to the YmL27 ribosomal protein family.
