Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and play a role in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition compared to prokaryotic ribosomes, where this ratio is reversed. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ greatly among species in sequence and biochemical properties, making recognition by sequence homology difficult. The MRPL40 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and deletions in this gene may contribute to velo-cardio-facial syndrome and DiGeorge syndrome.
