Target Information

CYP3A4 encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. These monooxygenases catalyze reactions involved in drug metabolism and the synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids. The protein localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum and is induced by glucocorticoids and various pharmacological agents. It metabolizes approximately half of all drugs in use today, including acetaminophen, codeine, cyclosporin A, diazepam, and erythromycin, as well as certain steroids and carcinogens. This gene is part of a cytochrome P450 cluster on chromosome 7q21.1. Previously identified CYP3A3 is now considered a transcript variant of CYP3A4. Alternative splicing results in multiple isoforms.
