Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. FGF family members possess broad mitogenic and cell survival activities, and are involved in various biological processes such as embryonic development, cell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumor growth, and invasion.
This protein acts as a secreted factor stimulating growth of cultured glial cells. In the nervous system, it is mainly produced by neurons and plays a role in glial cell development. Expression of the mouse homolog depends on Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling, and knockout mice show male-to-female sex reversal, indicating a role in testicular embryogenesis.
