Target Information
Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein involved in cell-cell adhesion and epithelial layer maintenance. It interacts with E-cadherin and alpha-catenin, linking adhesion complexes to the actin cytoskeleton. Beta-catenin also associates with the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) protein and participates in various signaling pathways, including Wnt/Wingless. Dysregulation of beta-catenin is implicated in several cancers such as pilomatrixoma, medulloblastoma, colorectal, ovarian, and other solid tumors. In the nucleus, beta-catenin co-activates Lef/Tcf transcription factors that regulate genes promoting cell proliferation (e.g., cyclin D, c-myc).
