Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed.
Mammalian mitoribosomes lack the 5S rRNA found in prokaryotic ribosomes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly across species, making sequence homology recognition difficult.
MRPS15 encodes a 28S subunit protein belonging to the ribosomal protein S15P family. The encoded protein is over twice the size of its E. coli counterpart, with conserved 12S rRNA binding sites. Among small subunit ribosomal proteins, MRPS15 shows the lowest conservation between human and mouse. Pseudogenes for this gene are found on chromosomes 15q and 19q.
