Target Information
PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) is a chymotrypsin-like serine protease belonging to the kallikrein family, produced by the prostate epithelium and abundant in seminal fluid. PSA can be detected in the serum of patients with prostatic carcinoma. It is predominantly complexed with alpha-1-antichymotrypsin (ACT), a liver-derived serine protease inhibitor. In prostate cancer, a higher proportion of PSA is complexed with ACT compared to benign prostatic hyperplasia. PSA is used to confirm prostatic acinar cell origin in primary and metastatic carcinoma and to rule out non-prostatic carcinoma mimics.
