Target Information
Adipose tissue acts as an energy reserve and is tightly regulated. Adipocytes produce and secrete several physiologically important proteins, including lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, Acrp30, perilipin, and resistin.
Resistin, also known as Adipocyte Secreted Factor (ADSF) and FIZZ3, is a cytokine specifically secreted by adipocytes. Although its function is not fully understood, it plays key paracrine roles and is implicated in type 2 diabetes.
Studies have shown:
- Serum resistin levels are elevated in obese, diabetic mice, antagonizing insulin action.
- Resistin induces insulin resistance and glucose intolerance in mice.
- Resistin gene expression requires C/EBP alpha and is influenced by coactivators CBP and p300, which acetylate histones at the resistin promoter, activating chromatin for transcription.
- PPAR gamma and RXR ligands downregulate resistin expression in adipocytes.
