Target Information
POU5F1, commonly known as Oct-4, is a maternally expressed octamer-binding protein and was the first transcription factor described for early developmental stages. Its role in embryonic development suggests potential in the creation of stem cells for cell replacement therapies in degenerative diseases.
Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells can be generated by expressing POU5F1 along with transcription factors Sox2, Klf4, Lin28, and c-Myc in mouse fibroblasts. More recent studies show iPS cells can be produced using expression plasmids for these factors without viral introduction, improving safety for regenerative medicine applications.
