Target Information
Ankyrins are a family of proteins that link integral membrane proteins to the spectrin-actin cytoskeleton, playing key roles in cell motility, activation, proliferation, contact, and maintenance of specialized membrane domains. Multiple isoforms are expressed in a tissue-specific and developmentally regulated manner.
Ankyrin 1, the prototype of this family, was first discovered in erythrocytes and later found in brain and muscles. Mutations in erythrocytic ankyrin 1 are associated with hereditary spherocytosis. Complex alternative splicing patterns and truncated muscle-specific isoforms have been described.
