Target Information
SPTAN1 (spectrin alpha chain, non-erythrocytic 1) belongs to the spectrin family of filamentous cytoskeletal proteins. These proteins serve as essential scaffolds that stabilize the plasma membrane and organize intracellular organelles. Spectrins consist of alpha and beta dimers forming tetramers in a head-to-head arrangement.
SPTAN1 is also involved in DNA repair and cell cycle regulation. Mutations in this gene cause early infantile epileptic encephalopathy-5. Alternative splicing leads to multiple transcript variants.
