Target Information
The F13A1 gene encodes the coagulation factor XIII A subunit, the final zymogen activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer of two A subunits (catalytic) and two B subunits (carrier). Platelet factor XIII consists only of two A subunits. Upon activation by thrombin and calcium, plasma factor XIII releases its B subunits to form active factor XIIIa, a transglutaminase that stabilizes fibrin clots by crosslinking fibrin molecules and other proteins such as fibronectin.
Factor XIII deficiency can lead to bleeding disorders, impaired wound healing, and habitual abortion.
