Target Information

T cell receptors (TCRs) play a crucial role in distinguishing foreign peptides from self-peptides presented by MHC class II molecules, which is essential for adaptive immune responses. Recognition of self-peptides by TCRs has been linked to autoimmune diseases, while mutant self-peptides are associated with tumors. Engagement of TCRs by bacterial superantigens can lead to toxic shock syndrome. Autoantibodies to V beta segments of TCRs have been found in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), potentially serving as a compensatory immune mechanism.

Most human T cells express TCR alpha-beta and either CD4 or CD8 molecules (single positive, SP). A smaller subset lacks both (double negative, DN), which may increase in certain autoimmune or immunodeficiency disorders. Gamma-delta T cells, mainly found in epithelial tissues, exhibit less TCR diversity and distinct antigen recognition, with subsets showing antitumor and immunoregulatory activity.
