Target Information
The P2X1 gene encodes a purinoceptor for ATP, functioning as a ligand-gated ion channel with high calcium permeability. It mediates synaptic transmission between neurons and smooth muscle, contributing to sympathetic vasoconstriction in small arteries, arterioles, and vas deferens. Mouse studies indicate its role in normal male reproductive function. Development of selective antagonists may offer potential for non-hormonal male contraception.
