Target Information
Fibrinogen, the precursor of fibrin, is the coagulable protein in the blood plasma of vertebrates. Following vascular injury, fibrinogen is cleaved by thrombin to form fibrin, the most abundant component of blood clots.
Fibrinogen consists of a dimer of three pairs of non-identical chains (FGA, FGB, FGG) cross-linked by disulfide bonds at their N-terminal segments. The molecule has two terminal D domains and one central E domain, which are separated when fibrinogen is degraded by plasmin.
Mutations in this gene can cause disorders such as dysfibrinogenemia, afibrinogenemia, and renal amyloidosis.
