Target Information
The Factor VIII gene encodes a coagulation factor that functions in the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation. Factor VIII acts as a cofactor for factor IXa, facilitating the conversion of factor X to Xa in the presence of calcium and phospholipids.
Two alternatively spliced transcripts are produced:
- Transcript variant 1 encodes isoform a, a large glycoprotein circulating in plasma, associated noncovalently with von Willebrand factor.
- Transcript variant 2 encodes isoform b, a smaller protein consisting mainly of the phospholipid-binding domain essential for coagulant activity.
Defects in this gene cause hemophilia A, an X-linked recessive coagulation disorder.
