Target Information
Aconitase 1 (ACO1), also known as iron regulatory element binding protein 1 (IREB1), is a cytosolic protein that binds to iron-responsive elements (IREs) and plays a central role in cellular iron homeostasis. IREs are stem-loop structures found in the 5′ UTR of ferritin mRNA and the 3′ UTR of transferrin receptor mRNA. Binding of IREB1 to IREs results in repression of ferritin translation and stabilization of transferrin receptor mRNA, thereby regulating iron metabolism. Aconitase 1 also exhibits aconitase enzyme activity and is part of the aconitase family.
