CHD3 유전자는 chromo domain과 SNF2 관련 helicase/ATPase domain을 포함하는 CHD 단백질군에 속합니다. 해당 단백질은 Mi-2/NuRD 복합체의 구성 요소로서, 히스톤 탈아세틸화를 통해 크로마틴 리모델링에 관여합니다. 크로마틴 리모델링은 전사 등 다양한 세포 과정에 필수적입니다. 또한, 이 단백질에 대한 자가항체는 일부 피부근염 환자에서 발견됩니다. 세 가지 대체 스플라이싱 전사체가 보고되어 있으며, 각각은 서로 다른 동형 단백질을 암호화합니다.
