Target Information
Transgelin (also designated SM22alpha) is abundantly expressed in smooth muscle cells. Transgelin-2 (SM22alpha homolog) is a homolog of transgelin and is also expressed in smooth muscle cells and peritoneal B-1 cells.
The human transgelin-2 gene (TAGLN2), located on chromosome 1q23.1–q25, encodes a 199 amino acid protein containing a calponin-like repeat and a calponin-homology (CH) domain.
Transgelin-2 may function similarly to transgelin. During embryogenesis, transgelin is expressed in smooth, cardiac, and skeletal muscle, but later restricted to vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells, with low expression in the heart.
Downregulation of transgelin has been observed in several transformed cell lines, suggesting its reduction may be an early indicator of cellular transformation.
Transgelin binds actin, inducing actin fiber gelation within minutes at a 1:6 actin monomer ratio.
