Target Information
Excitatory amino acid transporter 2 (EAAT2) is a member of a family of solute transporter proteins. This membrane-bound protein is the principal transporter that clears the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate from the extracellular space at synapses in the central nervous system. Glutamate clearance is essential for proper synaptic activation and prevention of neuronal damage caused by excessive activation of glutamate receptors. Mutations or decreased expression of EAAT2 are associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified.
