Target Information

Structural maintenance of chromosomes (SMC) and non-SMC condensin proteins associate into complexes that are implicated in chromosome condensation. Proper segregation of replicated sister chromatids requires condensation into a manageable form prior to metaphase.

The condensin I complex includes SMC2, SMC4, CAP-H, CAP-G, and CAP-D2.
The condensin II complex contains alternate subunits CAP-G2, CAP-H2, and CAP-D3.

CAP-H2 (NCAPH2), also known as Non-SMC condensin II complex subunit H2 or kleisin beta isoform 2, forms part of a regulatory subcomplex that activates SMC ATPases and promotes mitosis-specific chromatin binding. The exact roles of each non-SMC protein in activation remain under investigation.
