RGS13 is the smallest member of the mammalian RGS (Regulators of G protein-signaling) family, which are structural and functional homologues of yeast SST2 and C. elegans egl-10 proteins.
RGS proteins attenuate G protein-mediated pathways by acting as GTPase-activating proteins (GAPs) for Ga subunits.
RGS13 is abundantly expressed in human tonsil, thymus, lung, lymph node, and spleen, and regulates Gai, Gaq, and Gas coupled signaling cascades.
It functions as a GTPase-activating protein for Gai and Gao, blocks MAPK activity induced by Gai- or Gaq-coupled receptors, and attenuates GTPase-deficient Gaq (GaqQL) mediated cAMP response element activation.
The human RGS13 gene is localized on chromosome 1q31.2.
