Target Information
This gene encodes the coagulation factor XIII A subunit, the final zymogen activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer of two A subunits (catalytic) and two B subunits (non-enzymatic carriers). Platelet factor XIII consists of two A subunits identical to plasma-derived ones. Activation by thrombin and calcium releases B subunits to form active factor XIIIa, a transglutaminase that crosslinks fibrin molecules, stabilizing the clot. It also crosslinks alpha-2-plasmin inhibitor or fibronectin to fibrin alpha chains. Factor XIII deficiency can cause bleeding tendency, poor wound healing, and recurrent miscarriage.
