The F131C gene encodes a member of the superoxide dismutase (SOD) protein family.
SODs are antioxidant enzymes that catalyze the conversion of superoxide radicals into hydrogen peroxide and oxygen, protecting tissues such as brain and lungs from oxidative stress.
Proteolytic processing produces two distinct homotetramers:

• Type C subunit: High affinity for heparin, anchored to the extracellular matrix (ECM)
• Type A subunit: Low affinity for heparin, not interacting with ECM

Mutations in this gene may be associated with increased risk of heart disease.
