Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. Across species, mitoribosomal proteins vary significantly in sequence and biochemical properties, complicating identification by homology. The MRPL24 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, over twice the size of its E. coli counterpart, with two transcript variants encoding the same protein.
