VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor)는 45 kDa의 이황화 결합된 호모다이머 글리코단백질로, 혈관신생(angiogenesis)에 관여하며 종양의 성장과 전이에 중요한 역할을 합니다. VEGF는 혈관 내피세포의 생존, 증식, 화학주성, 혈관 투과성 증가 등 다양한 생리적 효과를 유도합니다.
VEGF 패밀리에는 VEGF-A, VEGF-B, VEGF-C, VEGF-D, VEGF-E, PIGF 등이 포함되며, 이들은 주로 VEGFR-1 (flt-1)과 VEGFR-2 (flk-1/KDR) 수용체에 결합하여 신호를 전달합니다. 이러한 수용체들은 내피세포에서 주로 발현되며, 배아 혈관계 발달에 필수적입니다.
