Target Information
Rab3-interacting molecules (RIMs) are synaptic proteins essential for neuronal transmission and plasticity. Rim1 and Rim2 are expressed in overlapping but distinct patterns throughout the brain. Ablation of either gene is not lethal, but deletion of both results in postnatal mortality due to defective neurotransmitter release. Synapses lacking RIM proteins can release neurotransmitters but fail to respond to normal Ca²⁺ triggers. Like Rim1, Rim2 acts as an effector protein for Rab3, binding to Rab3 on synaptic vesicles in a GTP-dependent manner.
