Target Information
Nearly all mucosal surfaces are protected by mucin transmembrane glycoproteins, from bronchioles to corneas to reproductive tracts.
Mucin 4 (MUC4) is membrane-bound and plays a key role in protection and lubrication.
MUC4 expression is abnormal in various carcinomas and sarcomas, including fibromyoxoid sarcoma and pancreatic adenocarcinoma.
Immunohistochemical staining for MUC4 has been proposed as a potential biomarker for cancer detection.
MUC4 abnormalities are linked to diseases such as Taiwanese infertility, endometriosis, and gallstone formation in Chinese men.
Due to its role in mucosal surface protection, MUC4 dysfunction is implicated in many metastatic cancer invasions.
