Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family, which is part of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily. These proteins are involved in growth and differentiation processes. BMPs were first identified by their ability to induce endochondral osteogenesis in vivo. BMP4 plays a critical role in the initiation of endochondral bone formation in humans, and reduced expression is associated with bone disorders such as Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Alternative splicing in the 5′ untranslated region results in three variants encoding the same protein.
