Target Information
The LYZ gene encodes human lysozyme, an enzyme that hydrolyzes bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan by cleaving β(1-4) glycosidic linkages between N-acetylmuramic acid and N-acetylglucosamine. Lysozyme serves as an antimicrobial agent present in human milk, spleen, lung, kidney, white blood cells, plasma, saliva, and tears. Missense mutations in LYZ have been associated with heritable renal amyloidosis.
