Target Information
Actins are highly conserved proteins involved in various types of cell motility and cytoskeletal maintenance.
Three main groups of actin isoforms are identified in vertebrates: alpha, beta, and gamma.
- Alpha actins: Found in muscle tissues; major component of the contractile apparatus.
- Beta and gamma actins: Present in most cell types; components of the cytoskeleton and mediators of internal cell motility.
Actin gamma 1, encoded by this gene, is a cytoplasmic actin found in all cell types.
Mutations are associated with DFNA20/26 (autosomal dominant sensorineural progressive hearing loss) and Baraitser-Winter syndrome.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
