B4GALT2는 UDP-galactose를 donor substrate로 사용하는 type II 막 결합 당단백질 중 하나로, β1,4 결합을 통해 Galactose를 GlcNAc, Glc, Xyl 등의 유사한 acceptor sugar에 전달합니다.
각 β4GalT는 다양한 glycoconjugate 및 saccharide 구조의 생합성에서 고유한 기능을 수행합니다.
이 단백질은 N-말단의 소수성 신호 서열을 통해 골지체로 이동하며, 이 서열은 절단되지 않고 막관통(anchor) 역할을 합니다.
β4GalT는 서열 유사성에 따라 네 그룹으로 분류됩니다:
