Target Information
The cytochrome c oxidase (COX) family of proteins functions as the final electron donor in the respiratory chain, driving a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane and resulting in water production.
The mammalian COX apoenzyme is a dimer composed of 13 subunits, both mitochondrial and nuclear.
COX5 is located in the inner mitochondrial membrane and is the heme A-containing chain of the oxidase family that converts one molecule of oxygen and four molecules of hydrogen to two molecules of water.
Two isoforms, COX5a and COX5b, exist. COX5a is up-regulated under high oxygen (aerobic) conditions, while COX5b is up-regulated under low oxygen (hypoxic) conditions to optimize COX turnover.
