Ephrin receptors and their ligands (ephrins) mediate numerous developmental processes, particularly in the nervous system.
Ephrins are divided into two classes:
- Ephrin-A (EFNA): Anchored to the membrane via glycosylphosphatidylinositol linkage
- Ephrin-B (EFNB): Transmembrane proteins
Eph receptors are grouped based on extracellular domain sequence similarity and ligand affinity. They represent the largest subgroup of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs).
The Ephrin receptor encoded by this gene lacks kinase activity but binds to ephrin-B ligands.
