Target Information

The maf oncogene was identified by structural analysis of the AS42 avian transforming retrovirus genome. The Maf family is divided into two subclasses, large Mafs (vMaf, cMaf, MafB, and Nrl) and small Mafs (MafF, MafK, and MafG). Both subclasses contain leucine zipper motifs, which allow homodimerization as well as heterodimerization with other bZip transcription factors. Large Mafs contain an acidic transactivation domain absent in small Maf proteins. Although small Maf proteins lack inherent transactivation activity, they can act as positive regulators of transcription by partnering with transcriptionally active dimerization partners, or as negative regulators by recruiting repressors or forming inactive homodimers. Human MafF encodes a 164 amino acid protein with an extended leucine zipper structure and no N-terminal transactivation domain. Small Maf proteins are involved in development, differentiation, hematopoiesis, and stress response, each regulating stress mechanisms differently.
