Target Information

Nuclear lamins form a network of intermediate-type filaments at the nucleoplasmic side of the nuclear membrane. Two main subtypes of nuclear lamins can be distinguished: A-type lamins and B-type lamins.
A-type lamins (lamin A, lamin C, lamin Adel 10) arise from the same gene by alternative splicing, while B-type lamins (lamin B1 and lamin B2) originate from two distinct genes.
Mutations in A-type lamins are associated with several rare genetic disorders such as Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy, dilated cardiomyopathy with conduction-system disease, and Dunnigan-type familial partial lipodystrophy.
The expression of A-type lamins is linked to cell differentiation, and their interaction with chromatin suggests a role in regulating differential gene expression.
