Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the G protein–coupled receptor superfamily, specifically expressed by taste receptor cells of the tongue and palate epithelia. These intronless genes encode a 7-transmembrane receptor protein functioning as a bitter taste receptor. The TAS2R4 gene is clustered with three other candidate taste receptor genes on chromosome 7, associated with bitter perception. TAS2R4 acts as a gustducin-coupled receptor for denatonium and N(6)-propyl-2-thiouracil, involved in bitter compound detection in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract. It signals through PLCB2 and TRPM5 and is expressed exclusively in gustducin-positive taste receptor cells.
