Target Information

The tachykinins are a family of small peptides including neurotransmitters substance P, neurokinin A, and neurokinin B, which act on three related but distinct seven transmembrane G-protein coupled receptors.
The NK-3 receptor (NK3R) shows the greatest affinity for neurokinin B and is highly expressed in the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei. Upon ligand binding, NK3R activates a phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system, likely leading to the release of vasopressin and oxytocin.
NK3R may be involved in learning and memory, as mice lacking this gene exhibit cognitive deficits. It may also play a role in regulating vagal afferent relay neurons, although activation in airway nerves is likely mediated by substance P or neurokinin A rather than neurokinin B.
