Target Information
The CYP2A6 gene encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. These proteins are monooxygenases that catalyze many reactions involved in drug metabolism and the synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids.
This protein localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum, and its expression is induced by phenobarbital. The enzyme hydroxylates coumarin and metabolizes nicotine, aflatoxin B1, nitrosamines, and certain pharmaceuticals.
Individuals with specific allelic variants may exhibit a poor metabolizer phenotype, leading to reduced metabolism of coumarin or nicotine. The gene belongs to a cluster of cytochrome P450 genes (CYP2A, CYP2B, CYP2F subfamilies) located on chromosome 19q. It was formerly referred to as CYP2A3, now renamed CYP2A6.
