Target Information
Placental Alkaline Phosphatase (PLAP) plays an important role in the regulation of inflammatory processes. There are four related alkaline phosphatases: intestinal, placental, placental-like, and liver/bone/kidney types. PLAP is a membrane-bound isoenzyme (Regan and Nagao type) expressed in the placenta during the third trimester. It is a useful marker for identifying testicular germ cell tumors. PLAP-positive somatic cell tumors typically express epithelial membrane antigen (EMA). Although PLAP is proposed to contribute to matrix mineralization, mice lacking this enzyme show normal skeletal development. Mutations affecting PLAP are linked to hypophosphatasia, a disorder characterized by hypercalcemia and skeletal abnormalities, with variability depending on mutation type.
