Target Information
Adipose tissue serves as an energy reserve in animals and is tightly regulated. Adipocytes secrete various proteins such as lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, Acrp30, resistin, and perilipin.
Perilipin is an intracellular lipid droplet-associated protein regulated by hormones and localized to the droplet surface. Upon lipolytic stimulation, perilipin is phosphorylated by protein kinase A, inhibiting hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL), which hydrolyzes triacylglycerol.
Expression of perilipin is restricted to adipocytes and steroidogenic cells. Two isoforms, Perilipin A and B, are known, produced by alternative splicing of a single gene.
